Go for it.My first tank I built was 12' x 4.5' x4.5' Steel frame with 1" marine plywood.I applied water proof paint and fiberglass for all of the seams.I used 2 acrylic panels for viewing.I also put a 2' x 2' panel to look in on the side.That worked out great.
