Should I be worried? Prazipro

Sounds like underfiltration is your culprit. Hence your Ammonia levels up
you know, i took this a bit personally when i first read this (dont know why), but now i think about it... even though i have all that filter media in there i think i still dont have enough filtration... Im not sure if its maybe because they havent fully matured yet or something else but i want to upgrade my filtration even more.. just having an issue with space. I'm in the market looking for 55 gallon drums or maybe even smaller just so i can add a moving bed filter onto it and put more ceramic media. I just cant seem to find one close enough for the right price...

text me about the 55 gallon drum. i can give you a number. I think I got 4 for $30.

Hope all your rays are doing well at this point. I remember the thread where this all stemmed from. Bought a freshly imported ray, mixed it with your main display without qt and got nervous when it wouldnt eat. So then the meds started piling up. That was a great learning experience for you I hope.

I would not be worried about a pH of less than 6. My tank runs very soft, between 5.5 and 6.5 depending on the time of year, time of day, how much fresh air is coming into the room ect. I have a massive biology on my system, but I also have ALOT of filtration. You are most likely correct that you had a massive bb loss. As someone else stated drip system is the way to go.

You shouldn't take things personally bro. People here are just trying to help. Doesn't matter how long you have been in the hobby. 5, 10, 15, or 20+ years... I have been in for over 20 years, I still learn things everyday. Fact is, everyone here has had different experiences. We are all here to learn.

Nothing personal, it's just IME canister filters are garbage for big bio loads. I had a small 6 inch ray with 2 5 inch peacock bass with a huge canister (marine land the biggest one) I added a 8 inch ray and my ammonia spiked. I immediately added a home made wet/dry 5 gallon pail filter and i was back to normal. I also had that same filter on a 220g with one 20 inch Umbee and a 12 inch Female.. That canister could not keep up. IMO 2 big sponge filters can handle more bio load then a fx6. To boot rays create even more bio pound for pound with fish.
It's the efficiency of the filter is what I have learned from these Rays keepers......

i personally agree. i hate canisters. they are even annoying to maintain and clean. sumps are the way to go for every aquariun. i just have the canisters on there cause they are available. i may take them off to just cycle other tanks. i do not depend on the canisters.

I am still having trouble getting the ammonia under .5 ... been over a week and been doing water changes just to prevent anymore damage. skinniest ray got some burning. I got tired of having my rays suffer for my mistake so i bit the bulk end of my wallet and ended up buying 2 liters of seachem stability. I heard good results from it, even though i dont really believe in bottled bacteria.

I added about 3 more liters of ceramic media (crap ones from ebay) and about 4 lbs of lava rock. Today is the first day i had dosed the bacteria. i will do a water test tomorow morning.

I had just bought 40 lbs of lava rock (cant fit in sump), and got 2 55 gallon barrels. im just waiting for my hole saws to come in and then i'll begin my building of the new filtration system. It'll hold 10x more media and should increase my filtration efficiency. the barrels will be closer to a sink and a floor sump. This way it enables me to make a drip system when the time comes. right now i cant afford it so im just waiting for income to build up.

i think my rays are also tired of me trying to feed tilapia. im going to buy more shrimp today from the asian market to get their appetites back up.

It will come down eventually, just going to take awhile for all the new media to grow bacteria on it. Keep doing what your doing with the wc regime. If you are having trouble getting them to eat try live night crawlers. It's hard for any ray to resist crawlers.

Have you tried using a 2nd test kit to test ammonia? Just curious, sometimes test kits can read positive and there is nothing there. Also if you use a live bacteria (prime) that contains inorganic ammonia, that will test positive for ammonia on an API liquid test kit.

I havent used another test kit.. but when i test other tanks it reads fine. meaning that this tank has ammonia. i feel that the bacteria has a hard time growing because of the low ph. the ph is constantly dropping from the high ammonia. and bacteria doesnt really grow around 6.0 so now im resorting to larger water changes to try to raise the ph back to around 7 again as my water is 7.2 and wont do another water change for a week while dosing the stability. in the mean time i will be building and planning the new filtration until i can find another way...

Bacteria will grow in any pH. Ammonia is not causing your pH to drop. Not having enough bacteria to break down a heavy bioload or nitrate will. Ammonia is less toxic to fish at a lower or acidic pH, and more toxic and a higher or alkaline pH. So your pH lowering is actually doing you a favor in a way. Just don't let it crash or go below 5. If you can't keep it steady add some crushed coral into your sump to help keep it buffered.
