A typical wet/dry contains media on the bottom that is always submerged. In a bio-tower or one over the tank, the media drains completely so it is considered dry.
You beat me to it. ----but thanks for the clarification

chomper thanks,
but i have a question

my tank is drilled on the bottom the hole on the bottom is say 1 '' and my durso is 1.25''

if a made a 3'' durso and ran through the 1''hole would it drain more water or would it be restricted by that 1'' hole?

so if its restricted i have to cap off the bulk head on the bottom, and buy/build tradition overflows

ill be reading those sticky's

ok tank is 180 gal
quite 1 3000

bout 5 feet head
about 500gph
about 3x turnover

so with big cichlids i should be about 7x turnover
about 1260 gph

so the quite one 9000 might do it (but thats a little pricey 200$)
any pump recommendation for 1250 gph at 5 ' head

The quiet one 9000 and 14000 are JUNK! If you are looking for a good quiet pump that is around 2000 GPH, look into the pondmaster 2000. I've had nothing but problems with pentair pumps.

i should use a 1.5'' over flow or two 1'' over flows (probably one because the back of the tank is very visible)
The idea of a second overflow is for safety in case the first one is obstructed.

Look at the thread for drilling tanks. Drills are very reasonable if you look in the right place. I get mine from TDK on eBay.
