Do his part but don't tell him you have, tell the teacher first. Show the teacher that you have done it, then go ask the dude if he has done his part, on the day it's due. That way the teacher knows that he has done nothing and hopefully won't penalise you...

get the project done and then let the teacher know that the guy didnt do anything. i guess thats the best way to go... he might just be absent from class that day anyway so he wont have to do anything since he didnt prepare...

why help those who will not help themselves?

You aren't helping him, you are helping yourself. You burn him at the end. Bottom line is: The project needs to be finished.

Status?

you and your friend do your parts then in the last slide of the powerpoint presentation you have a sentance with something like "and Joe couldnt be bothered to pitch in" or explain to a teacher before your presentation. whatever you do dont help him or do his work, its his responsibility so let him deal with it.
if you do it he may claim he did the work and convince the teacher your lying, especially if you tell the teacher and they confront him. then your gonna get burned.

2 things.

1: Don't bring the class into it. That may be seen as childish.
2: You won't get burned. If he says he did it, tell him to reproduce the originals.

stuff him and let him sink. he has to learn that in the real world no one will pick up your slack without repurcusions. if you bail him out he learns nothing.

Do his part... that is life unfortunately. It won't be the last time you are stuck with someone who is lazy, and the work still must get done. The best solution is to do the work, tell the guy you aren't impressed with him, and either leave it there or tell your teacher what happened. It isn't really ratting... or you could just say "listen, I don't want to be in his group again" and they'll get the idea.

It sucks being in that position, I've been there. But if you have to take his load to do well yourself, then you have to suck it up. If you take the chance on waiting for him to do it, you may end up screwing yourself and your whole group over.
