Should I get a monitor or a tegu? I really like them but I need to know more about them like pros and cons. Which would be better for handling and an easier enclosure build? Which would be cheaper? Thanks for any help.

Spiny tail monitors would be cheaper but that is not a good idea to start with.

Well "monitor" and "tegu" can be many many different species of lizards. What specifically are you looking for? Are you looking for something small(timor monitor/Columbian tegu) or something larger(savannah monitor/Argentine black and white tegu)? Are you looking for something tame able or just something to look at? I am a bit biased because I have an Argentine black and white tegu but he is pretty big responsibility which is why the only other herps I have are leopard geckos(not that there's anything wrong with them). He is very tame(a better word would be accustomed) to me and he is very easy to work with. But both species eat alot especially the bigger guys and need a VARIED diet especially for tegus which can be omnivores. They need big cages depending on what you get and you must be willing to spend time with them. This really more applies to Argentine giant tegus and savs and larger monitors. If you have the time, space, and money then I would go with either a sav or Argentine black and white tegu. In fact, if i were to do it again I would probably get sav just to shake it up a bit.

I would recomend a Blue Tegu. But theyre a bit pricey and not as common as other monitors and tegus. But ive yet to see one that looks better than my little guys. :)

Yes I love blues also and I once considered getting them. They are like the "middle tegu". Not as aggressive as columbians yet not quite as tame as the argentines. They are larger than columbians but smaller than the argentines. Joe M you have beautiful tegus.

Silvertip0 who are you referring to me or Joe M?

Thanks. I try really hard to keep my tegus in tip top shape and as happy as possible. If Silvertip0 was talking to me there are some pics in an album in my profile that give a better idea as to their size. I usually tell people they're about 3 feet but i've never actually bothered to get a precise measurement.

Nice blues Joe, to the op think about the variables as to what you have to look forward to and what you can handle in terms of space budget and responsibility. Then make your decision from there. We can only give examples as third party contributors to the forum, but only you can choose the pet you are most attracted to within the variables you set forth for yourself.

if you taken care of reptiles for lont time get a argentina b&w tegu but if you want a moniter get a savanha moniter if your starting out get a blue tounge skink
