Should i go for a community tank or cichlid tank?

I had an overstocked/overfiltered mbuna tank. It was one of the prettiest tanks I've ever seen. Constant movement, beautiful colors and the occasional fry peeking out from under a rock. White crushed coral substrate with white/pinkish decorative rocks. Bright blue background with a bubble curtain across the back. People used to knock on my door and ask to see it because it was visible through the front window at night. Awesome tank.

I loved my African cichlid tank a lot better than my community tank.

i started with com fish, then south americans, then the africans, and now im into salt:P no matter what you start with youll wanna pick something new up:P

i like aclockworkorange's idea, really fun tank with that. its your choice, if you like having a bunch of peaceful fish, or just guppies and platties all in schools with some angels would be nice too. but on the cichlid side, you probably wont want to go back from cichlids IMO. they are practically pet dogs in a sense. oscars for instance, (south american cichlids) will let you pet them, ( dont over do it, slime coat) they will *greet* you when you walk in a room, and they just have a big personality, and a funny face. a big fish, with a teddybear attitude. or jack dempseys, or severums (awesome!) and blood parrots..contraversy with them, but..in the end, they're a funny orange ballon, trying to take on an oscar (lol). so in the end, its what you'd prefer, its just cichlids open a new door to fish keeping! :nilly: take care

Agree!

I have a community tank based on a Midas cichlid, 5 red hook silver dollars and a sailfin pleco. The Midas has a ton of personality and has been tormenting all the others lately to the point where I question my stock and am looking to change it out. The Red hooks were expensive at $20 a pop and I know that I will get very little for them at the fish store and plecos like mine are a dime a dozen. But these guys are totally getting beat on and torn up.

So do I keep my $8 Midas and get rid of $100+ of other fish? Honestly I dont know. But I can tell you the Midas has so much personality that I am inclined to take a hit in the wallet, get rid of the other fish and just have an all cichlid tank, so I can keep my Midas.

Yes once you get cichlid fever its difficult to have just a "community" tank anymore.
