should i go saltwater?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Percula clowns are not the best for symbiotic relationship. Better off with a clarkii or maroon. Definitely need a protein skimmer. With live rock and skimmer you won't need any other filter. If you want anemone or coral you need minimum of 3 watts per gallon, so compact flourescent or metal halide. 60 gallon is probably too small for a tang. Trigger and pufferfish will also eat any invertebrates like snails, shrimp and may even munch on anemone or coral.

Easiest setup is high quality light and protein skimmer with live sand and live rock.
Start with your clownfish and stay fish only for 4-6 months. After that, start with soft corals, like mushroom.

thanks everyone.
my current 60 gallon is freshwater, and its cycled.
can i just add salt mix and start goign saltwater?
or doi have to drain all the water, and cycle over again? o_O.
if i go live sand, and live rock, do i need any expensive or special lighting?

you can start adding salt gradually.

wait on live rock till tank is completly salt

Fish with live rock, easy and some triggers.

One 50/50 light bulb and one trichromatic day light bulb. Not expensive at all.

i have a 60gallon which is kinda free.
right now, i have 3 3'' Red bellied piranha in there.
i plan on selling them probably, so should i convert the 60 gallon to salt?)

I have over 800 gallons of saltwater tanks

when i got into fish, i always planned on getting a saltwater, but i did some research, and found it to be harding and more expensive than freshwater. so i started off with a freshwater (my other tank).

It's really about 5x more expensive

i have a whisper 60, heater, and flourescent light on the 60 gallon right now.
if i convert to salt, will i still need a protein skimmer? and would my current filter work?

i'd get crushed coral probably, or some sand. (which ones better?)

You have NO Idea how bad this is gonna be. Sand is better, stay away from CC.
You need Live Rock atleast 1lb per Gallon (usually $10/lb) Filters don't really "Filter" in SW tanks, the Live Rock and sand does most of the filtration.
A good protein skimmer which you would need with those fish would run you and additional $200-$300. You will also need 10x water flow..meaning 600gph of flow in the tank...

i want to get some;
1 porcupine puffer
maybe a trigger fish
definately some false percula clown fish
a blue tang (i know he'll be kinda crowded)
i'll probably add more fish later.

You can't have some of those fish in a 60 forget about all of them,

SW fish need 5x the room than FW fish..So if in FW you can put 1inch per gal, in sw it's 1inch per 5 galls of water. And you have to go by thier "grown" size, not the size as you get them. SW fish don't grow to size of thier environment, they just grow and grow....When was the last time you saw a small Ocean?

anywho, i want a FOWLR setup probably, but i do want some anenomies for my clownfish, so does that mean its not FOWLR anymore?
and what kind of light bulb would i need for the coral / anenomies?

Don't even think of trying an anenomie until your tank has been set up for a year and you NEED a Metal Halide light (anywhere from $300-$700)
Keep in mind that SW takes forever to cycle, atleast a month, then you can only slowly stock.

are those fish compatible together?

Yes

paOol said:
is 60 gallon big enough?

Not even close, more like a 120 min, All those fish get huge!

should i just keep my Piranhas (even though their boring)?

Yes you have it easy in FW and way cheaper, People will tell you to go for it.
and that it's easy.... I bet if you ask them, they have been doing it less than a year. Becuase in SW you really don't get a mature tank until atleast a year has passed, after that is when the fun begins..
