Hello, I was just curious on everyone's opinion on if I should join the U.S. Navy and why or why not.

Background:

I am currently 19 and living with my parents, working for my dad. I have absolutely no idea what I want to do with my future.

I want to join because I'm sick of living off my parents and would love to make something of myself. I'm a very shy person in general and hope the navy would also help me "grow up" a bit.

Any comments are greatly appreciated! Thank you.

I don't see where you could go wrong. The benefits and career development potential are great. I wish I did when I was younger. Also consider the Air Force.

If you are physically up for it and okay with the fact that these days service means potential combat, I don't see why not.

Yeah, that violence part scares me but as they say, you gotta do what you gotta do.

I also decided on the navy over the Air Force because I've been swimming since I was small and am very comfortable with being in/near water so it seems like the best fit for me.

If you are looking at the service as a way out but are scared about the thought of war, which is the main reason behind the military, and it's already war time I would say no.

Yes it can give you purpose and help you to as you say, grow up but the possibility of violence is always going to be there. When I went through basic it was a mix, regular and guard. Half way through during a lecture the NCO giving the class was interrupted. He then told us that the Russians had sunk one of our subs and the president had declared war. Effective immediately all guard were switched to regular army, the rest of normal basic was canceled and we would all be shipped to Fort Benning for accelerated infantry training and deployed. At this point he walked out for ten minutes. When he came back we were told it was a joke, this time, and this is what could happen at any moment. This is what military life meant and what we really had signed up for.

Just my two cents from an old vet.

Ultimately this is a decision only you can make. Have you discussed this with your parents? The potential of being sent “in harms way” is omnipresent.

I loved every minute I spent in the Army. Ok maybe not every minute but looking back on it I wouldn’t trade it for anything. My one of my grandfathers fought in the Frist World War, my father and uncles all fought in the Second World War and a couple of my cousins were in Vietnam. So when I was old enough I felt it was my obligation to carry on the tradition. My mother, as was expected did not share my opinion. I can remember like it was yesterday the day I received my Jump Wings.

If I was to suggest a military carrier for my children I would recommend they look into either the Air Force or the U.S. Coast Guard. Which ever branch of the military you decide on pick an MOS (carrier field) you can use when you get out and take advantage of the continued education benefits offered so you can continue your collage courses towards a degree during and after your enlistment is completed. I was in the Army many years ago and a lot has changed so maybe some of the younger guys can give you better insight into todays military. I wish you luck in what ever you decide.

Ultimately it's a very personal decision because your signing at least 4 years of your life to whatever branch you decide to join. Before I joined the Coast Guard I spoke with family, recruiters and active members of different branches for months before I decided to join.
To answer your questions, yes it will help you "grow up" if you commit to it and it will help you become more Independant as well. If you do decide to join find a career path that interests you and you can carry to civilian jobs. It's not exactly an easy life to live since you will be traveling and moving a lot but it can be very rewarding if the life suits you. Let us know if you need information and what you decide. There was a thread a little bit back about military members on MFK so there should be plenty of people with any information you may need.

Personally I'd say no for a number of reasons that I won't go into because a) they'll offend a number of posters above and b) they're smack in the middle of the realm of politics.

Ultimately I'll just say that it's your life, and you should think long and hard on whether or not you want the government to be in direct control of it.

This is great advice. Take advantage of the education that's provided and research a job that can translate to the civilian world. If you plan on not staying in, this a great opportunity to better yourself, learn a skill, and have a steady job for a few years. Joining the military was one of the best decision I have ever made. I was in a similar situation you find yourself in. Going to college, very dependent on my parents, and not knowing what I want to do in my life. I was pretty much spoiled, immature and lazy. YMMV but for me, enlisting help changed. Did a quick four years in the AF, and got a civilian job working with the military with lots of overseas travel. The location and housing sucks but the pay is very nice.

Study for the ASVAB cause this determines what jobs you qualify for. The better you do the more options you have.

As one of the above posters said, they own you for at least 8 years if you go 4 years active duty (4 years inactive duty required after your enlistments done) It's quite a commitment you are signing up for.
