Should I join the Navy?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Taking asvab was required for our high school. I scored 99 percentile on all fields and had to explain to the military that I was not a citizen(then) and can't possibly be qualified for westpoint, navel academy, etc.

You don't need to be a citizen to attend a service academies and/or join the military.

The entrance process for the service academies doesn't involve the ASVAB, either.

I served for 4 years. If my kid said he wanted to join I would do everything I could to talk him out of it. If I couldn't I would support him. The whole reason behind having a military is to defend a country or promote the countries agenda. So you have to ask your self a few things.

1. Are we defending our country or promoting a countries agenda?
2. Do I agree with my countries stance on foreign affairs.
3. Do I agree with the way my country is running its self.
4. Are you ok with taking another life? We are in war time not all service members are pulling the trigger but those that aren't are supporting those that do.

If you are all for it then serve proudly if you aren't then find another way to get out on your own. I would not use the military just as way to get out on your own. Nobody online can tell you yes or no. Nobody on this site has anything invested in your life. This is something to be discussed seriously with those close to you.

I agree with this post. If your only doing it because you want to move out of your mom and dads place there are other jobs. I don't know your situation but if you think joining the navy will solve your problems you're in for a surprise.

With the way the world is evolving ...you have to ask yourself if you agree with the current foreign affairs position ,if so then it MIGHT be a great decision.... good luck:)

Though our situations were a little different I also thought of joining the Navy recently. I wanted to because I felt that it would give me experience that I could ultimately use to my advantage after my time there as well as give me some consistency in life. Veterans preference really works in ones favor these days or at least I am told that, I piggy back off of what most are saying it's ultimately up to you. Any one could give a valid argument for both. I will say that as a Navy brat we never had any troubles as a kid both of my parents did not go to college or have great jobs but my mother by being in the navy and continually getting promoted made a career for herself when she might not have had the option without the navy. There are certainly benefits to joining the service but you have to weigh them against the possibility of combat and the very real possibility of losing you life (given your occupation in the navy).

Thank you for all the replies guys. I have looked at the other branches and talked to people in them and navy just seemed like the right match for me. I took a 'pre-asvab' kind of thing and scored a 96 on it, if I do decide to enlist I'd probably go with a FC or fire control men.

Being raised in this country I had been able to grow up not scared for my life and given so many opportunities I'm willing to put my life on the line to help serve it myself. Also the benefits are pretty awesome if I do say so myself.
