Hey guys,

Here is the deal. My 3 loaches and my Green terror have ich. The terror has already made vast improvements over the past couple days from the salt, heat and meds. The loaches on the other hand are just as bad as they were on day one.
I have to leave on Monday morning to go to New Orleans to do some Bio-Recovery and relief work and I will not be back in Boston until Sunday October 2nd. My girlfriend will be feeding my fish but has NO experience with fish especially meds. Should I just flush the loaches down the toilet and hope that will prevent any more spread of the disease? I have other fish in the tank that I really don't want this to spread to. I believe the green terror has almost won his battle so I am not too concerned about him.

Any ideas on what to do?

freeze em its the nicest way to go cause when they get cold they go into a natural hibernation and from there the water just reezes over and kills em in thre sleep

yeah especily with how exprensive they are what are the loches tank mates and what size are they cause iwast hinking about keeping them with a oscar and 2x jd's but i wasent shure about the agression

With an oscar? I would get bigger 4"+ if you can find them. The oscar will outgrow the loaches soooo fast and end up just eating them. Loaches are cool to have...Very active but in your case definately bigger is much much better.

Mine are in with a Dat.Green terror and a parrot.

Drop another airstone in the tank and bump the temp to 85F. All your fish should be OK for a month at this temp. Do a gravel wash, add salt, then leave it alone for the time you're gone (except for feedings, of course). The gravel wash will give you a head start on combatting the fungus by pulling the bulk of these organisms from your system. The heat and salt will do the rest. Chances are you'll return home to a clear tank and recovered loaches. Good luck.

Is adding salt a good idea for loaches? I didn't think it was.

If you must kill them I would have to say put them in the freezer or slam them as hard as you can against a hard surface...gross but fast. I would not kill them. Treating the whole tank is the best idea because even if you cannot see it yet it is likely the whole thing will end up with ich...its not a guarentee but just to be on the safe side keep treating, and as long as your treating anyway you can try your luck with the loaches.

What should the salt concentration be at? The tank is a 75g. I would like try try and save the fish if possible. My main concern is for the Dat. They are very very rare and hard to find around this area.
thanks!
