i have a 50g and im trying to breed convicts and JDs but my gravel is starting to grow alge. So would a plecostomus be OK???:nilly::nilly::nilly::nilly::nilly::help2::newbie::feedback::goldfish:

plecos almost never fix an algae problem (becuase sometimes they just dont eat algae) and if they do they still need to be fed other foods (vegetables mainly with some meats here and there for commons anyway) thereby increasing the nitrates in a tank and the need for water changes

and if properly fed they can easily outgrow a 50 gallon tank

if you want a pleco that wont outgrow your tank and has a higher chance of eating algae get a bristlenose pleco

I feel like all plecos are cool and look good, if you get one just get one that wont get as big, not sure of which ones those are but I know theyre out there, also i have found plecos to be very effective at cleaning algae

yeah when they are small they are good at eating algae but IME once they get bigger they just rely on leftovers and algae wafers, +1 on getting the bristlenose as it will stay at a more manageable size, but try and figure out why your having an algae problem in the first place, fixing it may be better than adding another fish to the mix, make sure your nitrates arent too high and try not having the light on for as long

dont get a pleco, your algae problem will not be fixed. If you have algae growing on yuor gravel something is seriously wrong, as the gravel should be vacuumed or at least stirred every two weeks, or weekly ideally. You will ignore my post giving you solid advice and buy a pleco anyway I am sure of it.

I agree.. not only is having a pleco unnecessary for your tank... its also dangerous if your looking into breeding..

Instead.. use rid algae chemical... Pleco will go after the eggs, you want to make sure the eggs are safe from other bottom dwelling fish..
