Nice fish, tell them whatever they want to hear. Get the credit and roll on.....

......if you want to perpetuate their ignorance.

agreed.

I say use them as feeders or tell them they are for sure some type of hybrid even though you may not know exactly of what.

You might have bought that as a "Red Devil" But that fish has alot of midas in it.. Look at the mouth.. lol

I'm guessing that's a RDxMidas hybrid with more Midas that RD..

Midas: http://www.tangledupincichlids.com/images/citrw.jpg

RD: http://www.tangledupincichlids.com/images/A.labiat1.jpg (even without the swelled lips the body shape is different..)

You "don't have to" tell them anything. But as a fellow hobbiest would you want to buy a fish you thought was full midas and have it be a hybrid once it grows out? Or worse someone starts a breeding project. They buy a bunch or one to make a pair then market the 1000's of fry ignorantly as full blooded not knowing and contaiminate the gene pool. It wasn't too long ago that you couldn't find any 100% RD's. And yeah I know the LFS could market them as whatever they want.. But if that's what they do and that was my only LFS to sell to then I would cull them/divide the breeding pair.

Tell, then it is an "assorted cichlid"? I have to agree yours is a midas/rd mix...that is what I have (it was labeled a "flamingo cichlid) anyway he looks sooo much like yours. I'll have to find a pic so you can see.

Well, I got a couple pics...mine is a bit older then yours I'm sure, and his "hump" is forming....I have another that was sold to me as a RD, I'm almost positive is a RD/midas.

the point I've been trying to make is.. If somebody is buying a fish from this store they could care less what the genes are hybrid or not. If I'm trying to buy a purebred fish I don't go to this store, neither would a fellow hobbyist that knows anything. I wouldn't even buy a jack dempsey there even if it looked 100% jack dempsey to me. You never know with the LFS I'd be taking this to. But yes I understand what you're saying thats why I made this thread.

anybody else..?

Your new user name is Petsmart ;)

I am pretty big on amphilophus stuff and I already know the red devils a hybrid but he looks to be more red devil than midas to me.
This is one of my first fish ever who is a "midas." I got him from petsmart 3 years ago which is obviously not a pure midas

And here is the f1 midas my red devil decided to start courting with a whole day after I introduced the 6 of them in with her (told you guys at the start of the thread it was going to happen lol.)

Those midas are about 5 months old and 4" and the red devil is maybe 8 months old at and a good 5-6" already. I've also got some saggitae, lyonsi, and a couple of amphilophus hybrids. Here are some pics.

Hybrid (I suspect red devil/midas X jag.) Probably one of my favorite fish, he just looks nasty but hes not too bad. Built like a pitbull though.
