hi,

I have used plastic 55 gallon drums before for filters, saltwater mixing containers, and to hold livestock. I almost never see them for free on craigslist (metal yes, but not plastic.) These popped up and I can get them free; but they were used to hold laundry chemicals. http://santabarbara.craigslist.org/zip/1217270973.html
Can I make them safe for fishkeeping purposes? How?
Thanks,
Stefan

thats risky... i personally wouldn't do it, but if they're free and you have the time to try and make them safe, go for it!

I honestly have no idea. I guess thats a good place to start, but it all depends on what chemicals were in there. some things can be impossible to remove.

fill them with water and then setup a chemical filtration. carbon, rock salt whatever chemical media you want. change the media weekly and they should be ready for use after 2 months.

this...

set it up and just treat it like a tank..check the levels as if you were cycling and monitor changes... they are free...

Ok, I got all 3 of these 55 gallon drums.

So they had laundry soap/fabric softener in them; but they are pretty clean. I am going to rinse them out real good.

After rinsing, I plan to fill them with water and rock salt for a week; and then repeat a few times. Will this remove any harmful chemicals so I can use them as filters??
