Should I use R/O water for my stingray tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
well, im not sure now... has anyone on here ever used R/O with rays ?
i have never had one and from everything i have read they have quite the bio load, i have never had anything with this type of bio load before...
im looking to you guys for advice on this. I have had my fair share of different fish over the years and am well versed in keeping decent water levels, but like i said, i have never had a ray and would like only the best for the one i get.
now with that said, i have discuss buffer and cichlid buffer incase ph happens to change cause of R/O as well i have discuss essential, all of which you can probably see in the pics of my tank beside the xp4, but i dont know about R/O right, what does that do?

Its just way easier to perform water changes without the R/O..

Usually people only use R/O when they import wild caught rays that are sensitive to heavy metals, like the tigers and flowers.. and then they wean them to the hard water over an extended period of time..

ok, well in this case having so many people having rays with so many different water levels and all doing fine, i guess i will scrap the R/O unit for now

I am a noob on ray, but Prime + 2 x 50% weekly w/c worked for me for the past year and the half. Just tap water is okay.

I think you'll want a LOT more filtration on that ray tank. I've been running an FX5, AC110, and Eheim 2217 on a 200 gallon tank with only a pair of motoros, and will be upping that to 2-FX5's.

how many gph do you think i should be pumping?
my xp4 pumps 450gph
and my AQ 110 pumps 500gph
i know those numbers are without media of couse but is that not pretty decent turnover for a 150g with only 1 ray?

with weekly 50% water change i think you will be fine... what other fish will be in tank??? just ray?

well i havent quite made up my mind yet,
i was thinking discuss for a while,
then i started thinking about getting some large bala sharks(8-10inch)
as i have seem both of these fish with rays as well as having both of these kinds of fish in the past so i know the req.

maybe 3 of one kind or the other so nothing big,
but for right now just the ray. till i see how my water parameters are for a while

more fish equals more feedings wich means more filtration... if anything you could just DIY a overflow and a make your own sump....

im not to sure about the overflow or sump
i had a friend who had a few sump systems and he hated them, said they were a pain to deal with, but im gonna do some more research on different filter builds/types and see what i can come up with
but anyways im not going to do anything till the ray is settled and i know what my water is going to be like, if anything i might get another canister filter, but we will see how the tests go. I am going to do as i always do with my tanks and not rush out and 5 more filters or build a 90g sump just to say oh look how good my filtration is....
as long as my water is perfect i couldnt care about how many or how big my filters are, if my water starts to stray at all from what i want i will put another filter in or buy something else if needed.
