Should I use sand or gravel for African cichlids?

Mbuna from Malawi would have a mixture of sand, gravel and rocks in their natural environment.

go with pool filter sand-i love it!

i have white play sand for my africans, i really like it, ive have filter problems though if the sand gets moved around. i find white sand brings out mbuna colors well.

Is sand ok to use with plants? If so, what kind of plants do you recommend to use with cichlids, I know they like to dig them up!!
Sand is fine. Anubias and Java ferns are frequently used but are best attached on driftwoods.

:iagree: yeah!! i know plants arent exactly fitting for african tanks, but i really do love seeing someone use java ferns, anubias etc in there-it gives a punch of color!

It depends on what look you like better. Personally, I really like white gravel with Africans. They look stunning over it.

I use pool filter sand. I also love it, and the best thing is it's easy to siphone and looks really cool.

I'd use a fine grade of coral sand, fine enough for the cichlids to dig in but heavy enough to not be sucked up by your filter. Looks good, and has the added benefit of buffering the pH and water hardness, to simulate the natural conditions where these fish exist in the wild.
