call it a newb mistake but.....

i bought a 14" shovel nose a few weeks ago and everything has been great so far. well today i thought i would try to see if he would be interested in some 3" (or so) feeder goldfish so i bought 6 of them at my LFS. I put them in and took the wife out to carrabbas, when we got back there was only one left!!!! my cat looks like he is going to explode. i feel horrible about it, i hope i didn't kill him by feeding him to much. i just figured he would eat one or two till he was full and save the rest for another day.

do you guys think i killed him?

lesson learned. setting up a second feeder tank

I would remove the last one just to be safe. Hopefully he can digest them with out issue. Is the fish acting weird? Or is it still swimming around and acting normal?

You would be surprised at how much they can cram into their stomachs. He will likely be fine. As previously stated, you may want to remove the last one but he should be fine.

Catfish can pig out and be fine, they get huge bellies on them that look horrible yet in a few days they will have digested it all and it will look good again.

They can carry parasites. Most say to quaranteen them. I always get mine at the same place and have never had an issue.

I have never understood the issue with feeding feeder goldfish. Use your best judgement. Don't buy feeders from petco or petsmart, or another corporate run petstore as the possibility for disease is higher. But if you have a respectable LFS that you trust near you feeders are not bad. Feeders are not GREAT but people want to claim they are some empty calorie meal when this is not the case. better options for your tsn would be talapia fillet / pellet (if he will take) / and id say feeders... all my TSN started on feeders and they turned out fantastic. Just my opinion for what its worth

Cheers

I agree with this! Feeders are great to get picky eaters feeding. I've never once had a problem I can associate with feeding gold fish. Additionally, I believe the parasite thing is a myth. The only time I ever needed to treat for parasites is wild caught fish. I have never seen a captive bread fish with a parasite. I do quarantine my feeders just in case. This also gives me an opportunity to fatten them up and keeps my hospital tanks bio filters active. Also it's a great way to "store" feeders so I don't have the big belly issue or even worse the feeder becomes a tank mate and never gets eaten :screwy:
