How many known varieties / types of shovelnose catfish are there ? I have a tiger shovelnose got him at 3". Now he's 10". Has anyone ever heard of tiger shovels having bred in captivity, in monster ponds, tanks or pools for that matter ?

The more common ones are tiger shovelnose, lima shovelnose, planiceps, tigrinus, and juruense. Specifically there are two types of tiger shovelnose fasciatum and tigrinum spelling might be slightly off so please excuse that... a few brachyplatystoma sp species and I'm sure tons of undescribed others.

Several Hybrid species of shovelnose catfish exist as well with the most common being the Red Tail Catfish X TSN hybrid, TSN X Marble Catfish, and the new TSN X Niger Hybrid which is just weird but really cool at the same time.

They successfully bred tiger shovelnose for the first time in the US back in either march or april 2006 I don't remember which month specifically just remember reading the article, in Ohio at a university aquaculture center I believe. They are breed in ponds off the amazon rivers I believe as well in south america and have been for some time for sale in the hobby as well as a food source.

Currently I have all of the first 5 species I listed growing out and would like to someday attempt to breed some of them like Tigrinus and Planiceps if I can find the space and time to do so. Here's a few pics for you to enjoy ~Trent

Thanks for the compliment. Juruense and Tigrinus both have long streamers on their tails. My Juruense has streamers around 3/4 of its body length and my tigs are around 1/2 its body length and growing quick ~Trent

great looking fish amazon. Your fish have really come a long way since last year. I am so anxious to start on my mega tank this summer.
