Hi all. It looks like I will have the opportunity in the near future to own a 75 gallon tank. I currently have africans and would like to get into south Americans. I would prefer one large show piece fish. I think a tilapia of any sort or a chocolate cichlid would be cool. Would I be able to fit either of these in a 75?

Chocolate could fit. Other options could be jds, gts, smaller amphilophus and parachromis species. All are going to be less forgiving to tankmates than a chocolate though.

thank you! I was thinking of just doing one fish no tankmates though!

Ok, so a lot more options then. If you like chocolates I say go for it. It really depends on what level of interactivity and aggression you want out of the fish.

puppy dog fish! I dont mind them being aggresive but I would like something interactive!

Welcome aboard

Some SA species of Cichlids require soft water but if your tap water is 7-8 range the Green Terror would be a good choice.

Lots of options here. Chocolate is a good choice, many of the viejas will work. I saw someone with a huge female breidhori that was awesome. Other options include red devil, Texas cichlid, loiselli, Uaru, or carpintus.

If you really want a wet pet it is tough to beat a puffer, but that is definitely out of scope of what you asked. Another one that is extremely interactive, but out of your scope is an archer (clouded is best). It would be a little weird to have just one in a 75, but it would work.

Out of all of those fish my choice might be the chocolate. They are really interesting and they seem to change colors with their mood.

In that case you are going to want a South American cichlid.
