Despite being located in a city with 6 brewpubs and in an area known for its excellent microbrews, the Sacramento Hilton lobby bar had a pretty sorry selection of beer, IMO. There were no hoppy beers to speak of, not even the "old standard" of northern California beers that's available practically everywhere else, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. However, there were some excellent pilsners like Pilsner Urquell and Stella Artois available. Nothing hoppy though.
Too bad, Pyramid Brewing Co., Sacramento Brewing Co., River City Brewing Co., Rubicon Brewing Co., Hoppy Brewing Co., and Brew It Up were all within a 10 minute drive of the hotel. Beer choices aside, it was a great convention. The lobby bar was one of those wide-open bars where everyone walking by can see whose drinking. Needless to say, I was there for most of Saturday.
Also, the speakers I attended were great: Alex Saunders on Madagascan cichlids, Oliver Lucanus on West and Central African cichlids, and Dr. Ron Coleman on phylogenetics. The Sacramento Aquarium Society hosted the convention this year and did an amazing job, IMO. They also led tours to San Francisco, Lake Tahoe, and the Amador wine country.
