If I use pool filter sand will the light substrate wash out the color in these guys?

My best guess is yes it will wash them out.

The darker the substrate the darker the fish.

don't worry his face is way better than that haha that was zoomed in too much lol. He resembles a lower jaw bichir imo. He is 12-13"
