Nice LN. I can't tell if what you've got in there are pacu or SD's or hooks, but do you have any problems with aggression ie the gar trying to bite/eat them?

they were 2 pacus. but i dont know what happened to them they just died. but they were fine. the pacus would nip at the gars fins every now and then but nothing serious.

Ah OK. I figured pacus but wasn't sure. My gar is really peaceful, really doesn't take a second glance at anything too big for him to swallow...I'd love to try a group of red hooks or other big dollar types but I think it's risky.

a school of silver dollars might work if have the room.

Keep in mind that gars like to snap at shiny things. I wanted a nice school of fish in my one tank containing a Florida Gar. So I bought some tinfoil barbs that were all way to big for my gar to eat. Well that didn't stop him from killing them by biting their tails off. He's a very calm fish and won't even snap up bite-sized convict cichilds but there was just something about those "shiny fish" that drove him to kill.

yea i forgot to mention that.

Yeah that's why I haven't tried it. I would do tinfoils actually, and the fact that my gar shows no interest in the little cons I have or my bichir tempts me, but there's that whole "silver fish" thing. That's why I'm leaving my chalceus in my growout tank...just don't want to chance it.

But then again people keep gars with arowanas so I guess it depends on the fish.

What is the smallest gar you can get?

a florida/spotted get to be about 24". they are the smallest and easiest to care for. and dont require as much room as other gar species.
