smallest species is technically the shortnose gar, not the Florida/spotted. captive sizes are variable for both species and depend on a lot of different factors. although the shortnose has a smaller wild max size, the Florida/spotted is better suited for the home aquaria and generally the gar of choice for those just getting into the group of fishes--

i remember reading that shortnose are the smallest species now. i said that cuz the F/S are as you said better for aquaria, and easiest to accomadate in size.
