Maybe his caps key is just stuck. If it is, then he can still use the shift key, it is just reversed (pressing shift makes you type in lower case), but then again, if that was the case, he could just use the shift key to type normally...

typing with your finger on shift is a bit of a pain. perhaps take a hammer to the caps lock?
