Jag i rescued from LFS he was brought in im shambles both side fins were half gone hes theiving now though and eats prob10-12 large pellets a day!! At 10 inches i wonder what he was up against im his old tank!

How do you know it's not a female that was getting beat up by her mate?

Looks like a male with all the spotting and head shape. Looks like yours here are pics, these fish are SO cool!

yes, they look similar, but at the same size, check out the nuchal hump on my male......notice how much of a more gently gradually tapering slope yours has on the forehead. Could mean nothing, but it could mean female and also could mean submissive male. Best bet so as to not stress it more, wait until it heals and take a picture of the vent/reproductive area

Male Dovii always have the hump, but even as a Beta-male, my Motaguensis still has a clearly visual hump. Fortunately, RTMs are sexed by spotting on the gill plates
 
I see what your saying. Hard to tell on kags bc they have that sloped head eaither way. He was named as " jax" at the lfs which is a private m amd pop atore with a crew thats been in the hobby a while. What signs do u look for when looking at the vent area?
