No. I believe the sheath of skin covering them contains the toxins. When they are shead, there is no skin on them. So, aside from a potential prick, I would say there is no danger.

Thanks but can any ray shed their stinger at any age? And how often do they shed them? BTW nice collections of stingers guys!

Bigfish has got it spot on! the sheath covering the barb carries the toxins, its not a hypodermic action as with a bee of wasp. Not too sure how long it is between shedding the barb,i would guess at twice per year.I just remove them as soon as i see them in the substrate, they can be very dangerous to the rays if you leave them in,not because of any toxin that might be left, rays are immune to the venom, but because its easy for a discarded barb to finish up embeded in a rays abdomen,i lost a stunning henlei this way, always check the sand or gravel regularly and dont have it too deep, probably another reason why so many people prefer a bare bottom tank.

This is a bit sad isnt it!. I saw this thread and decided to pluck all 150 of them out of my polystyrene in the fish house and hand them to my 7 year old daughter to carefully arrange on my Juwel aquarium lid, kept her out of trouble for a while.I gave some of the biggest ones to friends, some were 15cm long, they were off a large male Otorongo ray i had many years ago.
Thats a lot of Spines!

Wow!

Thanks all! And those are very nice reads Gr8!
