hi all,

i have two spotted gars, one of them has a shredded tail fin while the other one has not. what would be the best medicine to cure it?

thanks!

Is it fair to assume that the other gar is attacking the one with the shredded fins? I'm assuming that you only have these 2 fish in the tank.

good water quality thats all you need fins heal quickly no need for chemicals(up your water changes till they heal thats all)my cichlids split their fins from time to time for what ever reason and with good water they heal quickly

as stated above, gar fins regenerate very quickly...faster than many other species of fishes. don't use melafix, just maintain good water quality and you'll be fine. if this is a constant problem between the two gars, ample feeding will often times help. gars in close quarters (like home aquaria) will often times shred each others fins...this is sometimes something that cannot be remedied (other than separating them)--
--solomon

What size gars are they, and what size tank are they in? What tankmates? Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate readings?

i guess around 6-7". i do feed them twice a day and they stick closely to one another. the end of the shredded fin has something white. does that help? tank is currently 35gal

like said before this will be sumwhat common when u have multiple gar in one tank. happens to mine every few months when they start to combat over food. feedin a bit more and a bit more often should help.

In order to determine if conditions are optimal for the gar's tail to heal, though, water parameters are necessary. You should test often and keep nitrates very low in order to speed the healing process. Also, providing ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels will help us determine whether or not your water quality could be a contributing cause to the problem.

can we get pics to determin what happen? oh and u need to upgrade! that also can be part of ur issue.
