I want to breed red cherry shrimp and I am thinking of a 2.5 gal tank, is this to small? What do I need for the tank sand, plants, etc? How many shrimp do I start with? I was thinking of doing 2-3 different species of shrimp would this work out?

Thanks

Go bigger. 10 gal. I had mine in a planted tank. Careful of over feeding. This can cause planaria which kill shrimp.

I started with 10 malawi(similar size). My last count I had over 60 and that wasnt a perfect count. I have tons berried atm too

i agree a 10G would be your best bet to maximize the amount of shrimp you can have...

Also, just as a heads up, mixing different species of shrimp may result in hybrids in SOME cases...

Ok so 10 gallon---
Does it have to be planted??
what should the substrate be?
what kinds of shrimp could hybridize themselves??

10 g yes
Planted=should be , i'm useing java moss, anubias, dwarf sag
Substrate black gravel RCS look darker on dark substrates
As for shrimp hybrydizing not sure

Hybrids are often ugly. Stick with species that cant. Oh and ghost shrimp supposedly kill other shrimp

theres a pretty good setup available commerically if you don't mind spending a little cash. It's a cubic foot tank complete with an Amano guide, substrate, heater, filter, and lights that are terrific for plants. Only missing a CO2 system but those are easy enough to jury rig. My freind had a great setup with a bunch of shrimp and a 3 peacock gudgeons. looked great for a small tank though the whole setup goes from 100-175 depending on the store.

I keep adult ghosts with juvies rcs and no problems so far, only thing i've notice ghosts are faster to a food than rcs
