Since when was there open water between North and South America?

Well technically ever since we built the Panama Canal... But I was just messing with ya anyway

Also, do you expect a tropical-semitropical shrimp species to swim through the Artic or through the Antartic Drake Passage?

Of course this all doesnt even take into the consideration the great distance a small and relatively slow moving animal would have to travel just to get across the Pacific.

These were really my questions, if they could survive colder temps/stronger currents coming around the Horn, if they're open-water or near-shore inhabitants...
