I do the same thing. Except I also run an airstone.
I keep the air pump and a heater on a second smaller power strip. That way I can just shut off the main power strip, drop in the airstone and heater, and flip the switch. Once the water level drops below the overflows, I drop in the food.
Works great during sump maintenence too.
