Wow!! Very nice.. I'm getting one tomm. Woot! Woot! I noticed your smaller one is deep red and the bigger one is more bronze. Do they tend to get more bronze in color as they get older or is it a product of their diete?

I'm not sure it'd look good to cover that end, though. Maybe a few more big fake plants would do the trick though.

A wall of fake plants would be beneficial. Dithers and blanking off the end (like horse blinkers over eyes) does not need to be a permanent thing, just something to help it settle in and feel more secure. Dont rearrange internal tank arrangement until it feels comfortable. Tank maintenence may need to be reduced initially.

I have read that adding fake plants to the ends like a wall helps some with bashing and feeling secure like the last post said. Also dimmer lights are supposed to help.

Oh crap, right after I got him I did a moderate re-scaping of the tank, mostly to try to make it more suitable for a new ghost knife. I've only done one small water change since, though, so hopefully I didn't piss him off too much.

My trio of giant danios and a stupid leftover molly from my cousin's tank play the role of dithers for the smaller distichodus, but they're usually out in the open and the big guy pays them no mind. When he does come out he's much more interested in playing around with the smaller one.

Greyhoundfan, even though I own two of them my experience is limited, but everything I've read indicates that they tend to lose their color as they get larger. I'm going to be really sad when the smaller one dulls. He has always been super bright and is the first fish to catch the attention of guests. I'd definitely recommend picking up a younger one if you ever find one. Mine has been a great fish - gets cranky from time to time and terrorized a geophagus, but has been good lately. He tends to get more aggressive the fewer fish there are in the tank. Pack them in a bit more and he calms down. He's very bright, active, fun to watch, and I just love that they always look like they're smiling at you.

I have heard also they tend to fade some when big.

DaveB what LFS did you get this guy at?

They both came from Old Town Aquarium. They had a smaller guy there about 6 months ago too. All three that I've seen have lasted forever before being sold... I was able to bargain with them on the price of the smaller guy, and they probably would've given me the big one for free if I asked them to.

That place is generally overpriced ($90 for a 3-4" young aro for instance) but every once in a while I walk out of there without feeling like I got totally ripped off. Keeps me going back. Their stock is always sure to be healthy too. I have only had a few die on me in almost two years (not counting otos - those things died on me all the time).

Probably there a long time because of the price, they usually are not cheap
