Shy Motaguense

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Once they get larger yes but in general parachromis are shy when young

Sent from my VS840 4G

I have a 3-4" Mota that is very shy towards people but as soon as we stand far enough back that she can't see us anymore she comes out of hiding and tries to attack the fish in the neighboring aquarium. My smaller jags are very shy as well an so was my big female until she hit bout 5-6".

Describe your tank setup. I'm growing out 5 one inch motas & haven't found them shy at all. A little skittish when I first approach the tank, but they will eat from my fingers.

105 gallons, 48 inch long, 2-3 inch gravel, 2 large rocks flat rocks in front, one heater on the upper right hand corner which the motas use for cover. There is a glass divider on the left side that uses 1/4 of the tank which houses 5 one inch Festae.

They eat from your fingers, thats awesome !!! On occasions if I keep still in front of the tank, the motas would go out of their hiding positions, but any sudden movement sends them back in the corner :(

I think you need some more cover in there to help. I have mine in a 6ft 125, 3 large pieces of driftwood, small clay pots & pvc elbows. I've never seen them use the pvc or pots, but they dive behind the DW when I approach.

I've also noticed a very high level of conspecific aggression - just something to watch out for.

I have 6 juvenile motas in a 180gal all under 2" and no shyness that I can see... I had another but he has vanished for the last couple of days...
