I've kept Jags and motas for many years. If you want them to start coming out at a young age all you have to do is introduce a few Tiger barbs into the tank. They'll make them feel safer...after a while you'l start to see the barbs "disappear" Convicts can also do the trick but may not get eaten.

I have a pair of 5-6" RTM's in a 150g. They are a bit shy at first but come out more when I am around the tank for a while . I alos kep convicts and Silver dollars with them wich seems to pull them out a little more.
