Update: I got him to eat fairly well last night. Quite a few shrimp pellets. I get the feeling that he has no idea what is and isn't food, and is too shy to try it all.

I picked up one a couple months ago about 8". It has a hiding spot but not a real dark one, more like shade. I only feed when the lights are on, it took a week or two but now it's out and about anytime there is food in the water even with the lights on. It still comes out after dark and roams around but it's out everyday in the light. Nothing worse than a fish you never get to see. Good luck
