Shy?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Aside from the fact that the survival instinct is greater in fry than adults, discus occur in heavily planted and overhung (water lilies, tree roots, ets) areas of the river. Provide plenty of cover for the comfort of discus and angels. Eventually, as they mature, they'll become less shy (also as they get to recognize the person that feeds them).

thank you i will add more plants and maybe they will feel like there covered more and come out they hide underneath a overhanging rock i built... how many do you think i should have 8?? or more??

A 200 is a little big for discus. They will likely have issues with keeping weight on due to having so much space. They will actually burn off more calories faster in larger tanks. Feed a lot to fight this, I'd do at least 7 times a day.

Hey i have a 200 gallon tank i have 4 3 inch discus....there hiding alot is this normal or is something wrong???

I would tempt them out with live black worms. They really go for these and I've made friends with new discus by using them. Eventually, you can get them to eat out of your hand.

Good Luck!

would my lfs have live black worms??

They might, but I order mine from: aquaticfoods.com

IME, LFS's don't do a very good job of maintaining their blackworms. Many people have the impression that blackworms are really gross and if you get them from the LFS that may be. You need to rinse them on a daily basis with cold water until it runs clear. The ones that I get from the lfs are usually stinky and decaying from not being rinsed enough (bacteria).

I usually get 3/4 or 1 lb. and they last surprisingly long if you keep rinsing them and keep them in the fridge.

IME, these are a super food as I don't know of anything that fish are more attracted to. It's super-high quality protein - I get the best growth. And it's a great conditioning food to make your fish spawn. I learned about them from discus keepers, but they are great for almost anything that' not over a foot ;).

As an aside, I'm not employed by or affiliated with aquaticfoods.com! :grinno:
