:1zhelp:my new water monitor which i just picked up from southeast last thursday is shy all he does is hide and dig hes about 20-23 inches and pretty tame when i say tame not trying to bite me nor run away when im holding him but when it comes to him being in his cage hes always hiding he wont even eat in front of me i know hes eating cause i leave two fuzzy mice in a container and in the morning there gone but what should i do???

Your new pet is just trying to get used to its new home. I think you need to leave him alone for now. Also remenbar that is behaivior may be just normal. many young lizards spend a lot of time hidding because in the wild most things can eat them. For the period of time that you have him you cant expect from him a lot of trust or interacion. Let him be for now, dont make sudden moves and keep voices down. But at the same time make your daily chores like cleaning and give him food and clean water. this will make him understend that you are not there to hurt him. And give him time. Remenbar that you are allredy fortunate because he´s not being agressive with you. Also I just remenbar:he´s a wild caut or captive bred? if its wild he needs to be wormed:D

Definitely let him be for the first week or two. Then try to slowly interact with him for a few minutes a day. It will take some time for your monitor to learn to trust you and figure out that you are not here to eat him.

thank you for the info

i noticed at some shops this weekend that the bigger lizards that have not yet been around ppl much really hate being stared at for too long.$ diferent iggys and monitors got pissy from me just looking into their eyes for too long.I only bring this up because Im sure you like to look at him alot but maybe dont stare him down too much either. Its just a thought, sounds dumb I know.lol,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Try getting a crested, you cant tell if its eating for like 3 weeks,at least yours is showing proof of eating.
