A fish store had these dats for sale in a brackish section of the store at the same store the guy already bagged me an oddball clown loach and he asked if I would be keeping the 2 together. I said yea and the guy said that he could not give me a guarantee on the dat because he said the dats were brackish and might die. Should I be worried? or will the dat be fine in fullfresh with some aquarium salt?

Only silver dat (AT) live or can live in brackish water. But in most cases, many hobbists kept them (AT) in fresh water and they do pretty fine :D

You shouldnt have to worry about much :D

I'm pretty sure you've got yourself a silver datnoid.

Only two dats are documented to live in brackish water, the silver and new guinea dats. But both are capable of living in freshwater. The only requirement is your water has to be high in pH and very alkaline (hard). Otherwise, it will become very susceptible to disease and infection and probably will never thrive in your tank.

a lot of LFS think all dats are brackish. I got my IT from a brackish tank. My AT is thriving (I do mean that in the proper sense) in full fresh w/a pH of 7.5 and my water isn't very hard.

Which is the opposite for clown loaches which prefer soft acidic water. Both can work provided the loaches are too big to fit their mouths but I wouldn't suggest the mix especially where water conditions are concerned, at least not with the loaches placed in water with high alkalinity and pH.

Nevertheless, they are correct as Ming mentioned re the two species which were documented to live in brackish water.

Siamese Tiger Dat is what It was labled as. I can't get a good picture of it because my tank is too deep. and it is hiding in a plant in the middle. Its real silver in color compaired to the other species. It is pretty small maybe 3'' and shy could be because of the new tank, and is eating bloodworms.
I have wellwater here and I add aquarium salt to my loach tank to try and keep it softer I have had no problems keeping the loaches at all.
They were keeping the dats in brackish, correct me if I am wrong but wouldnt that make there water softer? I guess I'm alittle confused?? Maybe you guys can help me out I am new to Dats.

sorry for the crappy pic, does it look like this? If so, its a silver dat (AT)

It's a silver tiger, I can almost guarantee it (short of actually seeing it).

Brackish and saltwater is very very hard compared to the usual parameters of freshwater. pH in brackish water is also very high, sometimes exceeding 8.0, so that should give you an idea.

I've kept several silver dats in regular freshwater and they all seem to do just fine until a minor scratch get horribly infected. Some just die for no reason whatsoever. Mind you that I've kept them with other dats such as widebars and thin bars and it's only the silver dats that always die on me.

Therefore, through my own experience, you'd be much better off keeping them in high pH hard alkaline water.

Yea it looks like that pic, maybe the price would help you guys out it was $20 so it can't be one of the more expensive species/uncommon datnoids.
