i need help please i hav 2 dats and they are allways in hiding and relly dark they are in a 4 foot tank amm 0 nitite 0 nitrate 10 ppm ph 7.5 please help as i really want to see them in full colour and what will make good tank mates thank you :)

Get 2 more dats, they feel more comfortable in a community. Maybe dim the lights a little. What color is your background? How long have you had them in that tank? It often takes them a long time to get stable, some never do. What kind of Dats are they?

Dats are ambush predators and naturally hide, once they are more comfortable they may start to come out or even stay out of hiding. Like Tommydeal said try dimming your lights. Personally i've found that once dats start recognizing prepared food they no longer feel the need to "ambush" their food source and won't hide as much. Again just IME.

Thats very interesting Islander, right up there with something else that I read about feeding non live foods to dats helps to bring out their stable coloring.I already knew that they were ambush predators but I never made that connection.

OR

If you cant wait...

Take a few hundred dollar out (minimum $300) to buy a TRUE ST, widebar datnoid, they will always stay gold, never hide and swim a lot :headbang2

OR

if you cant afford a true ST...

You can buy a few ditlher fish, such as silver dollar, clown loaches, and a few others to make your datnoid to feel comfortable. Then they will start coming out :D

you can use aluminum foil to block out some of the light or get a smaller/weaker light.
