Sick Arowana? Stomach Ailments?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You need some bio media for your beneficial bacteria to grow in. I use ceramic rings. You need to get some asap. In order for your tank to cycle you need good bacteria in your filter. Those bacteria need a place to live. Your tank for sure isn't cycled and your probably gonna lose fish and deal with illness. It will be over a month before your bio media will have a healthy population of good bacteria in it. Maybe you can hunt down an lfs that will sell you some established bio media.

I guess little aro's just need the perfect environment to survive. I'm going to let the tank cycle for another 3 weeks with some 30% w/c weekly and then get another. Sound like a good plan?

thanks guys, yeah this is just a grow out tank until I move. I'm then going to turn my 90 gallon into salt. But, the aro is doing much better! He seems to have lost all redness in his stomach and getting some color back. Thanks for all the help

No it does not sound like a good plan. Baby arowana are best raised by themselves until 5-6" and shouldn't be mixed with large cichlids until the aro is 11-12" long and 2x the length of the cichlids.

They also do best if kept in water with nitrates below 10ppm and a stable pH. So having a good understanding of the nitrogen cycle is a must, along with a properly cycled tank.
