My betta i believe has dropsy. He is severly bloated just below his gills. I can see like through the bulge and his scales see to be clear there. He seems happy and still eats well. I have been treating him with Myicin for about 5 days now and nothing has changed. Any other ideas?

Dropsy has a poor recovery rate but a couple people have had success with widespectrum antibiotics and crushed garlic.

never treat with maracyn in a bowl it needs to be done in an aquarium that has mucho oxygen and filtration does nothing if not in these conditions... Also try not feeding him for 3 or 4 days... Seems mean but they can go for up to a month or more... the Betta splendens is very susceptible to swim bladder infections (usually the result of over feeding) if this is the case he gets very bloated and has a hard time staying further down in the tank... this would be the most common case that I see in the store...

That is what I call fish farts, raising the temp slowly to the low 80s sometimes helps this together with no food for a few days, I have seen it in small outdoor ponds when the temp drops and the feeding remains the same, too much food for the digestion to keep up with leads to partially digested food fermenting in the gut causing gas build up. it sound s funny but can kill fish. If that is what it is no food and warm water will let the gut handle the problem and sometimes you will even see them fart a bubble.

Sounds to me like your just feeding a cheap pellet or too much. Bettas eat very little and are often over fed. Feed laxitive foods like brine shrimp once a week and follow the directions on the food container. Speed up the metabolism of the fish by raising the temp.... which shouldn't go below 76 (82 is better). Do water changes and make sure you keep the top clear of debre so that the fish doesn't drown.

I noticed people actually take my advice when I put numbers in front like steps

1) feed frozen Brine shrimp (it's not healthy but it moves the digestive system)
(Hikari brand is my favorite)

2) Keep the temp above 76

:woot: :woot:

When I bred them I used frozen bloodworms, daphnia, and fruit fly cultures

have you tested his water

Actually it's 3 months without food. When they lay on the bottom they are actually waiting for the warm season before the rainy season when they will breed. You could add dither fish and raise the temp to perk them up. The vases were an awesome attempt to expoit yet another fish (goldfish bowls the first, fish that only grow to the size of there tank another). In the well taken care of vases people were told they would eat the roots, frogs would eat there poop and the plant would break down the waist further. well the fish would live 3 months until it got to cold or starved..... how can people sell things they know nothing about..... oh they just need a person that knows nothing about what they are buying.... :screwy:

My betta is in a 5 gal filtered tank. I've raised the temp and stoped feeding him for 4 days at a time. I'll try some blood worms. Thanks for all the advice.

Glad to help my freind.
