Sick Bichirs :'(

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That's the same stuff.... I think. The only difference is that none of my infected fish have it that low on their body. Mostly its around the top of their body, nothing down on their belly. Oddly, my fish look a little better as of last night. I'm going ahead and getting some maracyn anyway... The delhezis definitely look better (the blotches have started turning to gray - same gray as the fish) and the polli is no longer staying at the surface. I still have a lot of healing to go - and I can't pull off a hospital tank unfortunatly, not on that many fish. Medusa the evil congicus would put a stop to that. I can't combine her with any fish that she isn't with now (she tries to shred them). All the fish in that tank have already been exposed so it's probably better if I treat that tank as a whole anyway.

Okay I reread the thread again. Inf, the blotches sound similar but it's not that fast spreading and it doesn't have the red around the edges of the blotches (yet, at least). I bought Maracyn-Two.... A crapload of it because I'll be treating to 55s with it. I'm paranoid about using it though - Product recommends 2 packets per 10g to start with, which would mean 11 packets today per tank. That seems like really drastic but if thats what the instructions say I'll do it.

My guy @ the LFS recommended soaking their food in it so it can treat the infection inside AND out... any thoughts on this??

I just read up on Columnaris. That's really freaky, but I'm just about sure it's what they've got. It said it can be triggered in a multiple of ways, including handling (when I measured the fish last week...) and nitrite spikes (which I just had). Said to be highly contagious (could be from those damn featherfin cats - I've never got fish from there before and never had anything like this happen before). Either way, it's Columnaris and several sites recommend Maracyn2 as a treatment, along with lowering the water temp and increasing aeration. So here goes.

Maracyn-Two is absorbed by the fish through the skin.-Anne

Okay - good news, bad news. Good news, Dels/Senegals still seem to be improving. Bad news, Polli is getting worse, quickly. He's still eating, but the blotch on his back is turning red. The edges of the scales are turning red in a line - Will post pix in a minute. I've got a 10 I could quarentine in... but I'd only be able to put HIM in it. And it would be more for HIM than for keeping him away from the other fish. It's chocked full of baby cons which I'm growing out for food - all about 1/3'' long. If he doesn't improve by tomorrow, I'll move him.

It was probably the sickest it will be the slowest to heal just keep up the the meds it looks worse than it is I had a female polli with much the same problem its hemoragic septicemia
as long as its eating theres hope for full recoery-Anne

yeah agree. also if it keeps getting worse (eg the white blotch continues to spread at about the same rate or keeps getting more red) even after a good several days (max i'd give it is ~5 days) of treating with maracyn2, i would consider isolating it and try another meds such as tetracycline. this way it'll also save you on some of the meds since you'll likely need to treat the polli longer than the others.

as for the 55, since the other fish are getting better and responding to treatment, you can just leave them in there and complete the treatment.

Daily Update:

Same as before, good news AnD bad news. Good news, the blotch on Polly seems to be fading. The white scales aren't quite as white, and it might be shrinking. Regardless, it's not spreading. Bad news, Polly has more bleeding scales than before and more of this crap is cropping up on other fish, including the big lap and my big cong in the other tank. None of the blotches are as severe as Polly's, but are still noticeable. Continuing treatment with Maracyn2, and I've unplugged all heaters. Research said the heat will accelerate the disease, but that cold won't exactly change the outcome. Hoping I can slow it down in time to treat it ;)
