Got a 2 y/o knife fish, approx. 25cm long and has fin rot (treated with pimafix - recommended by aquarium store), however he is also having trouble breathing, swimming around for a short time and then lying down on his side on the floor... he is also not eating which is weird, especially for him. Checked all the paramenters, all fine. Plenty of airation as well. Housed with 2 angels and a royal whiptail. Any advice would be appreciated

ok so what are the actual numbers of the water params. People say fine then come back with .5 ammonia readings that where fine. I'm not trying to be mean but just covering the possibilities. As convict said, both pimafix and melafix can create an oil barrier on the water surface if there isn't enough surface agitation. That can severely reduce the amount of O2 in the water.

Clean wster will help cure the fin rot, this happened to a BGK I once owned.

For me Pimafix is an oil. If need to be i use it in a small tank and then later when fish is OK transfer and clean the tank and filter. Biggest con for me that it goes into your filter as well :(

So ya check the oil in surface and also look at the water parameter.

Do you have carbon in your filter ?
