Sick cichla. What kind of disease is that?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The only effective treatment for HITH/HLLE is water changes. Keep nitrate levels low and definitely make sure there's no ammonia or nitrite levels. The new filter may help in reducing ammonia and nitrite but it does nothing for nitrate. You must change the water to remove nitrate.

Fish can definitely recover from this.

Hi guys, thanks for the great input!

My tank is not a giant one. about 100 gallon with 3 8-10inch cichla. that's it! No other fish is in the tank. I've tested my water quality. There is 0 nitrite, just a little bit nitrate, which is in the recommended range. I've tested the water with all kinds of testing strips. I'm quite sure my water quality is fine. The tank is very clear now. I have one 100 gallon filter and one 150 gallon filter running at the same time, just because I want to eliminate any problems that may be caused by the filters. I think the filters are large enough to filter my tank. My tank doesn't have any other weird junks in it. No plants, no other living beings.

All three fish eat happily. That sick fish is still sick! He became very very dark. But I don't think his condition has worsened. His behavior became normal again after I did large water change and installed the second Fluval filter.

I do 25% water change every week. Is he malnutritioned?? Like you said, what exactly should I give him to eat? I've been feeding them with 3" frozen smelt from pet store. They are loving it! Should I rub some vitamins in the food? If yes, what exactly and how?

Did you test for ammonia levels, and exactly what kinds of filters(brands, names) do you have?

It looks like hith as well. Damage is there. Should qt and add salt to the tank. Try kanamycin and Furan2. No real way to know but either bad water or stress from other cichla. 3 cichla can lead to one fish getting picked on.

Would up ur water change to 50%. Switch to a pellet if possible then no need to soak in a vitamin supplement.

Yes they need a bigger tank.

Good luck.

I have a JBL CristalProfi e901 and Fluval 406 Canister filter.
No, I have not tested the ammonia level.
There is no sign of heavy breathing. They seem to be very relaxed at the moment.

Thanks! That fish usually picks on the others. I did a lot of water changes already. It's so difficult to raise these cichla.
