Sick cichlid, slime coat problem?? Please help.

Also, feeding him peas last night, I noticed about 3-4 hours after feeding him the peas he was already pooping them out. That seemed fast for complete digestion IMO.

Im no marine biologist, but there seems to be an abundance of large heavy bubbles. Large bubbles just seem to linger in the middle when they should rush to the top. The only bubbles present in my tanks are micro bubbles. The big bubbles from the filter and airstone shoot to the top immediately.

I believe you should find out why your bubbles are doing that. They are probably so big and dense that they stick to the chocolate and in turn pull off some slime coat creating the hairs you see.

it seems to me they look like some kind of parasite maybe anckor worm or some kind of hook worm... what temp is your tank at...the little spots on the side of the fish looks like ick ....

Yeah, that's fine. I see that a lot when there are too many bubbles in a tank. Unless you've got that tank severely overstocked, I don't see why you would even need the airstone at all. Try killing the stone and sit by your tank to watch for signs of stress in case the fish do really need it.

My guess it that all those darn bubbles are ticking the fish off and he's making extra slime to get rid of them.

x2.

I've got the airstone placed directly under the spot where the waterfall of the return on the filter enters the water, lots of bubbles in turn get shot down. Looking at the other AC 70 with no airstone below that, there's not much of a difference in the bubbles being created. The air bubbles in the water column are tiny, never larger than 1/32".

The fish does not have ich, it's clearly bubbles on his side, it's just the video quality doesn't show it. Watching more, he is excreting them from his lower body. The water temp is at 80 f, I'm not sure raising it will change or help anything. I do like the idea of removing the airstone and seeing if there's any difference, Knifegill, I'm gonna try that for sure.

I was under the impression, the more air in the water, the better for the fish and BB. That's the reason I had the air pump w/air stone in there, I've always kept them in my tanks (smaller tetra tanks) previously.

It was simple enough to try your advice Knifegill, so I turned off the air pump last night. So I get to the time when the lights pop on at 11 am, and the fish is perfectly clear of any bubbles. I've been watching him throughout the day and the bubbles are still present, but nothing like previously. I thought about it some and remembered at the time this whole thing got worse, I had just upgraded to a more powerful air pump for the tank. Since I've had that pump running is when the slime coat issue got worse. It has to be something with over oxygenating the water, right? I mean he still does have it a little, but not bad. I might just have to continue with the salt for a bit? I did notice on the water change last night he bubbled up alot, but he's been fine since. SO, BIG THANKS, KNIFEGILL....the issue is at least under control, I believe.

I also picked up some more bio rings and removed the ammo rocks I had in the filter. I'm planning a move within 6 weeks or so and want to build up some BB for another filter going on the 90g....this idea is ok right? I can't have too much bio material, can I?
