Sick Discus Juvies

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yea, actually the guy who sold me the my last 2 advised I use rodi also. Not only were all his fish really healthy, beautiful, and free of peppering, his fish were with plants and gravel, which from what I have seen is an accomplishment. The albinos he sold me were the ones showing ich, are a tad bigger than my original 7, but now are the dominant ones in the tank. Not bullying but at the top. Always hungry too.

I would try the warm water change and bump your temp up to 87. Baby discus need warm water see what that does before you go any further.

Thank you Aquanero! :) I'm going to give that a shot. I'll bump the temperature up in slow increments.

Give the raised temp (87 degrees) a few days and see how they react to that.

Will do sir!! Thinking about it, the ich and this issue both came during cold snaps here, so I'm excited to try it, Thanks again :D

#1 thing is to practice QT! I will NEVER add new discus to my existing stock! Once you start keeping these beautiful colorful flat fish you can't stop the urge to purchase more :D... but you still have to practice QT! If he/she is dark and sitting in the corner by itself and is a little bloated more than likely you have flagellates infection. If it was me i would treat the whole tank with Metro Up the tank to 88-90 dergrees, up the aeration and drop the tank to half the water volume so your only using half the recommend dosage and treat for appx 8-10 days. if you don't want to treat the whole tank then set up a 10g and do the same with half the amount of water and go from there.

Thanks whale :) None of my fish have darkened at all. No clamped fins at all, or marks. I don't even see any sign of stress bars on my Turq or Leopard. I really hope the little guy is just cold. It kinda makes sense. The tank is literally an inch and a half from sitting on the window sill and we've had weird cool/cold weather recently, not to mention sitting directly under a ceiling fan that sometimes runs 24 hrs at a time. A couple weeks ago I replaced a brand new 300 watt Aqueon heater after only 3 weeks of use. I wrote it off as a cheap Aqueon, but now I'm thinking it could have been working too hard. I think I'll add another heater, even as a safety precaution it will be worth it. I did pick up some meds for the sake of having something on deck and Seachems Metro is one of the meds I got along with Kanaplex and Prazipro. I haven't even opened the boxes, and hopefully I won't have to...ever if possible ;)

How often are you changing the water and how much? I'm surprised you got ich especially in those temps! One other thing to do is up the water changes and treat with epsom salt just to clean out their system. The slimy poo could be from the BW also.

Yeah, I'm hoping that slimy was from the bw. I actually am going to up my water changes to everyday from every other day :)

Well, I guess it wasn't the temperature :(
The obvious sick one died this morning. I just pulled him out. Something obviously in its belly. Couldn't really say if it feels like gas or something firm, but its round. Is there anything I could learn from this body or should I just toss it?
