  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They still feel the cold until they fall asleep.

Either way, he finally took his last breath. I feel terrible. Wish I had a tiny coffin to do a proper burial. Funny how attached you get when your trying to nurse something back to health. I just hope the next one I get doesnt have these issues.

Sorry to hear about your loss... always hard to lose a puffer with their personalities...

Thanks man. Never got to see his true personality or this would have been a heck of a lot harder.

It is an alternative. Some people use clove oil then freeze, and some just freeze. What happens is, as it gets colder the metabolism of the fish slows. Heart and breathing slow down till fish sleeps and dies. I believe it is humane. But who knows what it is like for the fish.

...im sorry i have had this argument with people so many times but i cant help my self.

THIS IS NOT HUMANE.

Look it up PetSmart stopped selling many animals because they got caught puting sick and dieing animals and fish in the fridge or freezer...to 'go to sleep and die".

Freezing is not pleasant, nor do you just fall sleep.. you go numb as ice crystals pierce your cell walls, and destroys the feeling in them witch hurts allot...thats why there are stories of feeling warm when people are deep in to hypothermia....but it hurts like hell to get to this point.

the fish might freeze over on the out side and appear to be dead but it could take up to an hour to freeze even a betta solid..(witch with its slower matabalisum will keep them alive with out water longer...while they freeze)

i don't mean to rant but i really do not think this is humane and it really gets to me when people say it is. they don't just fall asleep and die.

Sorry for your loss =( as to what LFS to go threw.. if you don't have many by you that are what you'de call "reputable" or trust their care.. You can either order one online.. or ask them to order one for you and come pick it up directly from them when it comes in so it doesn't even hit their water. I have done this a few times when the only LFS with the connections to get the fish I wanted I didn't really like their husbandry. Most "mom and pop" type shops are more then willing to do this for you. and like PP said. they are a seasonal fish. so building up a pleasent repituare with the person who does the fish orders can = a pleasent experiance. I often remind the LFS I regulalry visit what fish I'm lookign for.. that way when fish day comes around they will see it on the list and go "hey so and so has been asking me about these" or some places will have a list of customer names and what they are looking for. being persistant but pleasent works. working in a LPS these actions by customers are rarely ignored.

Most places have certain "ways they do it" so being nice and inquireing how to go about it will get you what you want then being aggressive or comeing off as "B*tchy".

fish wouldn't really feel cold if put in the freezer with tank water and frozen they are cold blooded might feel other things but not cold

Sorry for your loss. :( I cant imagine how I would feel if my fahaka died.

Barely got to know him like I said, little guy was so cute when I thought he was doing well. He hit his big tank and at just 1 inch was chasing the tail of the 5-6 inch upside down catfish. Sprinted across the tank to eat on that day too. Thought he was gonna be perfectly ok. Last night just took a turn for the worse. I found another one, gonna give myself a day of empty tank and cleaning before I go get it. Dont wanna just replace the little sicky too quickly, left a big impact in just 4-5 days.
