The Jack that he was with does have some health issue that we haven't been able to solve

What health issues does the JD have? What are the symptoms? The two fish were together and the 29 gallon the GT is currently in has biomedia from the JDs tank. It's likely both fish carry whatever this is.

Do you mean the dark spot on his head? He did freak out the second day I added FMG and flew up into the cover and hit his head. Last night I was only able to find Kanaplex at the store, so I water changed the FMG out of the system and added that. Today he continues to gasp, and is extremely restless, however his fins are no longer clamped. This is the second day he has hasn't ate anything.

how big is the GT? it looks like it can handle not eating for at least 1 week, and not look thin.

The JD goes for extremely long periods without eating, so has a badly sunken stomach, and lack of growth. When she does eat, she is very picky, so I usually give her what she is willing to eat. For example, she likes Aquascape's Koi Krunchies. I also sneak in some Cichlid Gold and Algae wafers. She asks for food constantly, but spits most of it all out and it ends up all over the tank and in the filter. I have no idea how she is still living with how little she eats. So needless to say, I like never see her poop. She does breathe a little on the heavy side, but she has done that from the day we got that so we thought that was unique to JDs or at least her.
Someone there told us that JD are prone to getting intestinal parasites or infections, so we tried a few different medications, and she would never accept the medicated food I attempted to give her. Same person also told us that some times these diseases are completely resistant to treatment, so after a year and a half of failing with different aquariums, tankmates, food, medicines, temperatures, lighting, etc...we thought that must be whats going on here and gave up.
While the GT was in there she ate well (expect the last month he had her stuck in a cave), but she never put on any bulk and her stomach was still terribly sunken. The GT ate like a pig, grew, normal poop, normal breathing, active and friendly while in there and for the last few weeks in his new tank.

He is about 6". And that's good to know because I was curious about how long he could go without eating. I've never had to force feed a fish before, and I would prefer not to...

Is the JD an electric blue? Did you ever feed metronidazole medicated pellets to the JD if/when he was eating everyday?

About the GT, have you introduced anything new into the 29 gallon ... plants, fish, live food ... anything that could bring anything new?

I wouldnt worry until he reaches 3 weeks of not eating

The JD is a regular Dempsey. I have not tried that medicated food, so I appreciate the suggestion and I will try to find it. The only recent addition to the 29 gal was plastic plants about 3 days before the GT got sick. That's why I'm so confused about this situation.
The GT is worse today despite the last dose of Kanaplex being put in shortly. While gasping to breathe, he doesn't close his mouth at all, and he is weak. He is bumping into the sides of the aquarium and bottom and bouncing off. To make matters worse, once he stopped clamping his fins, I noticed he now has severe fin rot in the areas that were nipped by the JD. Areas of fin rot on his dorsal that were small yesterday are now large today. I figured the Kanaplex should have halted this as well, but it so far has appeared to have no effect. He has been basically just bouncing off the bottom of the tank, then straightening himself out, then just sinks and bounces again usually with his head

So he's having trouble swimming? Did this just start? It's hard to know what what to treat with when you don't know what's wrong. Something's going on though. Can you post a video? That might give Rocksor Rocksor or someone an idea. I'd plan on another antibiotic but I don't know which would be better. Furan 2, Triple Sulfa, Neoplex, or something else. What's your water's pH?

There's nothing there to indicate columnaris.

Had to read the whole thread over. Cichlids can be complicated with these kind of things and vague symptoms. I do have some concern of meds being used for a long period of time, this can lead to resistant strains.

Would repeat ur water parameters again. Consider redosing with the kanaplex and furan together. Add some tanins to the tank. Do a heavy salt bath/dip 4tsp in a gallon of water in a bucket. Keep it there for 15min. If the fish turns over or deteriorates in the bath then return to the main tank.

If this doesn't fix it then it maybe something else going on. These abx should kill most bacteria in there. Maybe resistence (mentioned 1.5y treatment prior) or toxicity from FMG. Hope it recovers.
