The past 2-3 days my favorite jack has had a very swollen belly, with a little bit of stringy stuff potruding from his anus, he prefers to only sit in one spot and likes to have his back fin resting on a rock for some reason. He is starting to loose color and he just sits there gasping and I am getting really worried!!

I'm sure many other fellow fish keepers now how I feel.
The other Jack in the tank is his female partner and she is doing just fine. Can somebody give me any ideas as to what is wrong here?:confused:
 
Sounds like internal parasites. Use parasite clear by jungle, I've never used but it gets recommended a lot and is a good product.
 
I've seen it at walmart, meijers, all fish stores.
 
most LFS should have it, and so would wal-mart . . . I have used it and it does work . . . if you cannot find it, ask for API General Cure; very similar
 
This is either constipation or internal parasites. Give it a few days first with fasting and do not feed anything to the fish except peas once or twice a day daily to help dislodge the possible undigested foods clogging the digestive system. If condition does not improve in at least 5 days, you may try treating with praziquantel.

What foods did you use? If you are using commercial brands, could you please post the ingredients and guaranteed analysis? You might want to start adding fiber-based diet instead of those protein as protein is very hard to digest in excess amounts.
 
just to add to the above, if you go the medication route, praziquantel is one of the main active ingredients of both Jungle Parasite Clear and API General Cure . . . the other main ingredient in both is metronidazole, which is also often recommended for internal parasites

They didn't have that at my LFS!!! :irked:

All they had was this stuff by jungle called 'Lifeguard'. I removed the carbon and put the tablets in the tank thinking he would get better. Next morning I woke up and he was dead. :cry::cry::cry::cry:
