Well I think my Jar isn't transitioning well. He seems to have lost his appetite, very outside edges of gills seem to have a slight curl to them, and his fins are looking ragged. He is also jsut resting on the plants in the tank. Seems to be lethargic and have no energy.

I am currently doing a water change and slowly upping the temprature to 80. He was brought in exactly one week ago as of tomorrow. The last 3 days I ahven't fed any live foods just offering pellets and he has eaten a bit of the frozen bloodworms that I feed my other fish.

He is the only fish showing signs of stress, I will run to the LFS shortly and get some crickets and see if I can get him eating again and continue with daily water changes.

Tank specs:

220g with overflows
70g custom sump
Mag 18 return
4- Hydor Koralia 1's with wavemaker
temp currently 76 going to bump it up to 80

Any thoughts or ideas?

Also thought I would throw this out there the tank water smells fishy/ musky river like. The tank has never had that odor to it previously I wonder if something is breaking down causing the smell and also dirtied up the water. Doing a nearly 100% water change to help reset the tank even though I jstu did a water change on Saturday. Typically change 80-90% of the water when doing a water change.

EDIT: Also about the last 3/4" before his tail is looking somewhat red and swollen and the scales look slightly discolored.

Well I will update later need to get to the LFS for some Aquarium Salt and some live crickets

Test your water parameters. Test the water that you are doing water changes with. During the summer months water companies will add ammonia with chlorine to the water supply.

Ammonia - 0
NitRITE - 0
NitRATE - 10ppm
PH - 7.7
Temp 81f

No ammonia in the local water supply Chlorine only no Chloramines. Tap water it treated with Prime for full tank volume during waterchanges.

At this point the Jar is jsut hanging out at the bottom of the tank and not really doing anything. I am just keeping an eye on him as every now and again he does swim around a bit then comes back and rests.

Also added 1 cup of Aquarium Salt to the tank and need to add another one but want to up the salt level slowly.

I was really suprised to see how fast he went down hill. He was up swimming around this morning in the dark before I left home and then 3.5 hours later he looks like he was run through a shredder. I know his fins didn't look like that last night when lights went out but I didn't really look at his fins this morning before I left as I didn't know he was going down hill.

How far should I move the temp up?

Really hoping to get him pulled back and up to glory again as he has some beautiful markings and really want to see him grow big. I did get some crickets from the LFS and have them in a keeper with some shredded carrot to gut load them hopefully I can get the Jars appetite back up and running.

You can run the temp all the way upto 84-85* but just make sure the tank is well aerated, there is less oxygen with higher temps. With your water params where they are at I would bypass the stress of a water change. Unless you are thinking there is some other pollutant in the water.

Guess only time will tell at this point, not looking good but I will give him his due chance at recovery, wish I knew what casued such an instant turn in his health.

PH has stabilized around 7.5 and temp at 81-82 kicked most of the lights off to help reduce stress and lots of surface agitation to help keep the oxygen levels as high as possible.

You can try stress guard (seachem) and / or melafix (api) for this. See if you can get them at your LFS. Jars don't last very long in the condition you are describing (I know, I've lost two of them in very similar circumstances), so, do not delay...

Both times before, my Jardinis lasted no more than a week or so. For me, this third time is a charm. I agree with bderick67, to a degree, however, for "my money" and "my Jardini", I would probably do daily water changes anyway with liberal use of stress guard. And make sure you dechlorinate also.

Keep us posted no matter what you decide to do.

The LFS was out of Melafix till truck comes tomorrow so I will go back in after work. If not I will see if they have Stress Guard in stock. I moved him to a holding net in the big tank so I can monitor him closer and also put an air stone in with him. Definitely will keep everyone posted as to how he goes hoping I can bounce him back to shape.

Sounds like a case of Dropsy bro...increase temp to 32-34 degree Celsius , add Lots of salt and do 50% water change daily. Rest assured, u will notice positive changes in 2-3 days.

Do you have tea tree oil? That's about all melafix is.
