try some boiled shelled peas and garlic, that will flush him through. add some salt too.
is the black blotch the one at the bottom?

Been giving peas for a couple days, as for garlic, what's the best way to feed it? The black spot at the bottom is the one I was talking about, there isn't one on the other side.

Although some JD seem to express a mark there on Google images.
As long as he is eating I wouldn't worry too much, try some natural remedies before meds, salt, peas, garlic, extra clean water, extra gravel vacuum and substrate clean, extra vitamins and minerals.
Your plants might need removing if you hit the tank hard with salt.
He is a nice looking JD btw, l like that you are in control of the hobby, I commonly end up over stocked and can only dream of the will power to keep one fish and a plec in a tank like that.

Thanks. In all honesty, I'm not that in control, he's tried to kill or eat everything I've put with him.
He's gotten a bit better, a little more active and hasn't been scratching. The peas cleaned him out pretty good. He's a bit more spooky though, freaked out when I tried to look at him earlier today.

this seems to be kind of a tricky one. Fish can get a cancer similar to melanoma but that doesn't look right to me. plus the color will not fade. There could be an irritation at that location on the skin/scales or even internally. If you can I would pull him out of the water and run your fingers over both sides of the body with gentle force and see if they both feel the same or any kind of "lump" can be felt.
How often do you see him flashing? is it on one side more then another and where on the body?
If he is eating well and starting to act better I would keep an eye on him or try some salt
Are you on well water? What do you use to condition your water?
any chance you have a microscope at home?

Ok, I'll try to get hands on him tomorrow, kids just went to bed. The flashing isn't a daily thing, maybe twice or three times in a week, usually one to three passes slightly more frequently on the side with the spot. I'm on county water, good quality with 0ppm ammonia. I use seachem prime. I've never used salt before, is there a special kind? How much do I use?Do I treat the 55 he's in or put him in a quarantine? Sorry for all the questions, I've not used salt or any meds before...guess it's been a lucky two years for a beginner.

Your LFS should have API aquarium salt or equivalent. I use 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons. just go ahead and treat the 55. Remember alt does not evaporate and is only removed with water changes

Thank you kindly sir.
