Sick Oscar

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yeah, I just wondered if somebody could see anything else about him.

there might be 2 tiny spots on the GT. but even so, it's mild.

aside from possibly missing earlier symptoms in the oscar, I have no immediate idea. your tank & other fish look very good.
Have you seen the oscars' poop appear normal? (before yesterday)
Do you have a water changing schedule?
Do you treat the new water with something, and what product?

When I first got the Oscar he didn't eat much for the first week as he adjusted to the NLS pellets, but now that you ask and I'm thinking about it I don't remember ever seeing him poop much until I seen the white stringy stuff yesterday...I change about 40% of my water at least once a week and sometimes I'll throw a 25% change in during the same week if I have time. I use a Aqueon water changer and treat the tank with Prime every change.

Sucks cause I feel like I do a good job on keeping on top of my maintenance and I test my water at least every 2 weeks just to be safe.

It's hard to see in the pics but there are some white spots on the fins of the Green Terror there are 2 on the back fin (can't tell in pics) and 1 on the top fin towards the back which is barely visible in the pics.

I started to turn the heat up on the tank to try and do the 86 degree treatment to hopefully cure that.

Oscar died already :(

Does it typically go that fast? He seemed perfectly fine yesterday morning.

When fish finally show signs of weakness its almost always too late, their survival mechanism kicks in to help them survive as predators pray on weak or injured fish, so they avoid showing signs or symptoms, and when they finally do their usually at the last stage my friend, all we can do is keep water pristine and feed a good diet.

Go S. Vettel #1 rb8

if you hadn't seen normal poop, he probably had IP's when you got him. that could make him susceptible to a bacterial infection moving quickly inside- but that's a guess. IP's are treatable when noticed.
maybe ppl more experienced than me can do better.
I'd treat that whole tank for IP's.

Since I'm dealing with internal parasites and most likely ick...what plan of action should I take to treat the tank? I already started raising my temps last night to get them up to 86-87 to hopefully kill the ick, but should I treat for IP's at the same time?

Considering the speed at which the oscar died, Yes, treat for IP's and ick at same time. Although he may have struggled longer than was obvious, I would be very proactive in case there's an unusually aggressive pathogen.
I've never treated the 2 simultaneously, or seen how your oscar died. but I'd try to simplify the treatment by finding one product that treats both things & especially covers all IP's. Also do LARGE water changes throughout treatment (replacing the med dose per gallons removed)..that is to dump any aggressive bacteria that may be present. also, ick meds only kill the free-swimming stage & you don't want to risk any immune compromise in your fish, due to the unknowns in your tank.
If you need a specific med, I'll ask someone else to post, as my own med & disease experience is limited.

K, some good news I suppose, I just stopped at home on my lunch and the temp raise appears to have helped the GT as the white spots are gone so I'll continue with the raised temp. I grabbed some Tetra Parasite Guard (only thing I could find that said it treats internal parasites). So I'm waiting on those to dissolve and will be adding it to the tank shortly.

good luck! you keep a nice setup, we all have problems sooner or later.

Thanks, I'm planning on getting a bigger tank in the next month or so.

Something I remembered today too was I do remember noticing that my Oscar "yawned" a lot...is that a sign of something wrong? It wasn't like constant, but noticeable.
